Lucy meets Fire Brigades Union Northamptonshire to discuss heatwave pressures

Lucy met Helen Durman, Brigade Secretary for the Fire Brigades Union in Northamptonshire, at Moulton Fire Station on Friday 7th August.

They discussed the pressure this summer's heatwave has put on crews, including a rise in wildfires across the county.

Helen also raised how the nature of fires firefighters deal with is changing, with a growing number of incidents now involving vapes and e-bike batteries, alongside the wider pressures crews are facing in the service.

Lucy welcomed news of the upcoming refurbishment at Moulton Fire Station, calling it a boost for the crews who work there.

Lucy said: "With fire risks rising this summer, it was important to sit down with Helen Durman from the Fire Brigades Union and talk through what the public, local authorities and government can do to reduce that risk, and what more can be done to support the firefighters doing this life-saving work. Helen was candid, and it was a really helpful meeting."

Northamptonshire's firefighters have worked flat out through one of the toughest summers on record. Lucy will continue to raise the issues facing crews with the fire service and with government.
